Invitation to lovers and curious people of dance Contact improvisation
at the Wednesday “jam” with exploratory introduction.

Location: Studio Pierre-Paul Savoie

When: 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (introductions inspired by somatic education) and 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (jam). The jam continues throughout the year with exceptions..

Cost: Contribution of $5 to $10 requested.

Description: At the very beginning of each session, 20 to 30 minutes of explorations inspired by various approaches in somatic education are offered to you. Each session is an opportunity for new discoveries. The body provides multiple entry points where we can go to meet it and then from there to meet the other.

The guidance is initially an invitation to “come home” to enter the body, to occupy the places of our body, to inhabit it fully.
Then, welcome what emerges, let the body guide us with complete confidence and see, over the course of the dances that follow one another, our intertwined stories unfold.
What laughter, delight, contentment and well-being!

The Wednesday jam usually takes place without music, although the voice and sounds produced by the body participate in the dance that is created and their expression is welcome. Musicians can also join in on occasion. There is a piano in the room.

The guided part at the beginning is followed by the “jam” according to the usual free formula. People who do not wish to participate in the initial explorations are welcome to the “jam” from 7 p.m.

Invitation aux amoureux et curieux de la danse Contact improvisation
au « jam » du mercredi avec introduction exploratoire.

Lieu : Studio Pierre-Paul Savoie

Quand : 18h30 à 19h00 (introductions inspirées de l'éducation somatiques) et 19h00 à 20h30 (jam). Le jam se poursuit à l'année sauf exceptions.

Coût : Contribution de 5 à 10 $ demandée.

Descriptif : En tout début de chaque séance, 20 à 30 minutes d'explorations inspirées de diverses approches en éducation somatique vous sont proposées. Chaque séance est l'occasion de nouvelles découvertes. Le corps fournit de multiples portes d'entrée où l'on peut aller à sa rencontre puis de là à la rencontre de l'autre.

La guidance est dans un premier temps une invitation à « revenir à la maison » à entrer dans le corps, à occuper les lieux de notre corps, à l'habiter pleinement.
Puis, accueillir ce qui émerge, laisser le corps nous guider en toute confiance et voir, au fil des danses qui s'enchaînent, se dérouler nos histoires entremêlées.
Que de rires, de ravissements, de contentement et de bien être !

Le jam du mercredi se déroule habituellement sans musique quoique la voix et les sons produits par le corps participent de la danse qui se crée et leur expression est bienvenue. Les musiciens aussi peuvent se joindre à l'occasion. Il y a un piano dans le local.

La partie guidée du début est suivie du « jam » selon la formule libre habituelle. Les personnes qui ne souhaitent pas participer aux explorations du début sont bienvenues au « jam » à partir de 19h.

A weekend to dive into four foundational structures that have shaped the history of Contact Improvisation and related practices:
– Tuning Scores
– Underscore
– Contemplative Dance
– Round Robin

Facilitated by Andrew Harwood, Valérie Sabbah et Stéphanie Gaudreau

Through these four structures, we will explore how these practices can serve as preparation for the Annual Jam and for our dancing spaces: refining our listening, playing with our perceptions, tasting the role of passive/active witness, and discovering how the smallest gestures can become shared compositions.
The exploration also includes time for self-inquiry, reflection, writing, and sharing—a precious opportunity to question how these legacies nourish our lives, our teaching, and our creations.

Participants will develop their ability to be simultaneously dancer, witness, and composer, cultivating clarity, responsiveness, and the joy of improvising together.

We invite you to take part in the full weekend in order to fully experience the process and to broaden our collective reflections.

All are welcome—dancers and acoustic musicians.

Group limited to 20 participants.

🔹 Please note:
• To participate in the Underscore, you must be familiar with its content. An introduction will take place on Saturday, October 4th at 1 p.m. at Studio Proto, followed by a practice session from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
• Otherwise, a talk-through is planned for Friday, October 31st at 6 p.m.

It is a structure developed by Lisa Nelson, are an improvisation practice that invites dancers and observers to compose together in real time through two simple but precise tools: movement and vocal calls such as Pause, End, Reverse, or Replace. These calls are not commands but propositions: desires that reconfigure attention, open new perspectives, and sharpen collective perception.

This offers a deep exploration of the phases that unfold during a Contact Improvisation jam.
The practice, lasting three hours, is unguided and self-directed: each participant is responsible for their own experience at the moment.
It is an immersive journey where kinesthetic improvisation and spontaneous composition can flourish within a structured frame. We begin together and end together, closing with a moment of reflection and somatization (poetry, drawing, writing through the body).

Important Note: The content of the practice is taught in advance. It is therefore necessary to:
• have participated in the one-hour talk-through about the phases & the hieroglyphs;
• and have previous experience in Contact Improvisation. The talk-through offers an introduction to the clear framework in which we will engage: an exploration of the Underscore's structure, which serves as a guiding thread for an extended session of improvised dance and Contact Improvisation.

The Underscore is a score that guides dancers through a series of "changing states":
• warming up on the floor (releasing, attending to gravity and support);
• moving through space and interacting with the group;
• opening to possibilities of partnering;
• entering group improvisation with an awareness of composition;
• returning to rest and reflection.

CDP blends together meditation, personal awareness, improvisational solo dancing & relational movement with others into a tasty potage of insight and delight to cultivate attention, connection, self-discovery and community.

Listening to your body move your body, paying attention to the bodies around you, moving with and being moved by this environment in this present moment, and nurturing the power of a gathering of like-minded explorers is our practice of depth and connection. This practice integrates tools for safety, clear consent and boundary-setting and is open to all curious bodies.

It refers to a practice structure in which dancers regularly change partners according to a set rhythm or order. The idea is to encourage a variety of encounters, explore different qualities of contact, and increase bodily and relational awareness through multiple interactions.

À travers ces quatre structures, nous explorerons comment ces pratiques peuvent servir de préparation au Jam Annuel et nos espaces dansants : affiner notre écoute, jouer avec nos perceptions, goûter au témoin passif/actif, découvrir comment les plus petits gestes deviennent des compositions partagées. L'exploration inclut aussi du temps d'auto-enquêtes, de réflexion, d'écriture et de partage. Une occasion précieuse pour questionner comment ces héritages nourrissent nos vies, nos enseignements, nos créations.

Les participant·es développeront leur capacité à être simultanément danseur·euse, spectateur·rice et compositeur·rice, en cultivant la clarté, la sensibilité et la joie d'improviser ensemble.

Nous vous invitons à participer à l'ensemble du weekend afin de vivre pleinement l'expérience et d'élargir nos réflexions collectives.

• Pour prendre part à l'Underscore, il est nécessaire de connaître son contenu. Une introduction aura lieu le samedi 4 octobre à 13h au Studio Proto, suivie d'une pratique de 14h à 17h.

C'est une exploration profonde des phases qui traversent un jam de Contact Improvisation. La pratique, d'une durée de trois heures, est libre et non guidée : chacun est responsable de son expérience dans l'instant.
C'est une expérience immersive où improvisation kinesthésique et composition spontanée s'épanouissent dans un cadre structuré. Nous commençons ensemble et terminons ensemble, avec un moment de réflexion et de somatisation (poésie, dessin, écriture du corps).

Note importante : Le contenu de la pratique est enseigné au préalable. Il est donc nécessaire :
• d'avoir participé à sa transmission d'une heure (talk-through sur les phases, hiéroglyphes) ;
• et d'avoir déjà une expérience en Contact Improvisation.
Le talk-through propose une introduction au cadre claire dans lequel nous allons nous engager : une exploration de la structure de l'Underscore, qui sert de fil conducteur à une longue session de danse et de Contact Improvisation improvisées.

L'Underscore est une partition qui accompagne les danseurs à travers une série « d'états changeants » :
• échauffement au sol (relâchement, attention à la gravité et aux supports) ;
