This year, we have the privilege of welcoming K.J. Holmes. She will be in Montreal for the Annual Contact Improvisation Jam and for two intensive workshops.

K.J. Holmes (NY) has been exploring improvisation as a process and performance art since 1981. Trained with Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith, and Daniel Lepkoff, she has collaborated with Simone Forti, Lisa Nelson, and numerous international artists. Her work combines dance, theater, voice, and somatic practices (Body-Mind Centering®, Ideokinesis, yoga, singing). A teacher at NYU, Movement Research, and internationally, she has performed in works by Matthew Barney, Miguel Gutierrez, and Xavier Le Roy. She is currently developing Blu/print, an ensemble creation initiated in 2023.

CONTENT
"What is my body doing when I am not conscious of it?" - Steve Paxton

This workshop is to honor practices devised by dancer Steve Paxton (1939-2024). We will artfully enter the basic principles of the form of Contact Improvisation which he initiated in 1972, and his Material for the Spine, begun 1986.

"Forms for sensations and sensing" (Steve Paxton) : these classes will offer students the opportunity to deeply enter the basic study of the physics and ecological forces dancers experience as they move in relationship with each other and themselves.

We will engage with the body in spherical space to improvise in solo, duo and with the class as an ensemble. As we deepen into the discipline of practice, we will evolve the process as tools for dancing to witness how we make sense of being HERE. Playing with the chronosphere and spirals of time, space and weight, we will explore what Steve has said: “Dance is the art of taking place. Improvisation finds those places.”

Sources will include several of Steve's writings as well as what we discover in our practices together in this living art form.

This workshop is intended for those wishing to go beyond regular practice toward composition and performance.

A passage from the somatic to the poetic, from improvised contact to shared creation.

Sharing of the work explored during the week.

Paraphrasing a quote from playwright Samuel Beckett, this workshop will deepen one's relationship to the Soma through practicing contact improvisation into performance, Soma (as in Somatics) in Latin means the body. In Sanskrit, it is the nectar of the Gods. Where we meet is in the play between the facts and the fictions. This is the location of our great imaginations.

This workshop will be an entrance into physiological and poetic character/qualities of the bodymind going from practice to performance. Traveling from the physics of the body moving in relationship to earthly forces and others to actively witnessing each other, we will create a dance that will further our experience of contact improvisation into an expression of our humanity.

Biography

K.J. Holmes : has been practicing Improvisational forms as process and performance since 1981. These practices have deeply informed her journey as an independent dance artist as well as an actor, vocalist, writer and teacher. An avid improviser and creator of solo/duo and ensemble work, she has studied with the early pioneers of contact improvisation including Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and Daniel Lepkoff, has collaborated and led work with and of Simone Forti and Troupe, and was a member of Image Lab performing the Tuning Score of Lisa Nelson. Other collaborators include poets Julie Carr and Edwin Torres, dancer Karen Nelson, drummer Jeremy Carlstedt, trumpeter Roy Campbell, Jr., actor Keith Biesack, and the Feel Trio (violinist Ramsey Ameen and poet/writer Fred Moten).

Her influences include Body Mind Centering ® and the work of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, Ideokinesis with Andre Bernard, Meisner acting work with Terry Knickerbocker, voice and singing with Richard Armstrong, Barbara Maier Gustern and Samita Singha, among others. K.J. is a certified Yoga teacher through her studies with Sondra Loring, and a certified Ayurvedic Holistic Health Counselor through her studies with Dr. Naina Marballi.

She teatches at NYU/Experimental Theatre Wing and Movement Research in NYC, as well as traveling nationally and internationally teaching, performing and creating, most recently at the Italy Contact Festival and at TicTac Art Center in Brussels.

K.J. has performed in the work of filmmaker/artist Matthew Barney, dancer/writer Karinne Keithley Seyers, music video of Mitski, Miguel Gutierrez, Xavier Le Roy, among others, as well as developing her own solo and group work.

She is currently conducting a new ensemble piece, Blu/print, that began Fall 2023 with a grant from the New York State Choreographers Initiative through the New York State Dance Force and with the mentorships of composer/instrumentalist Henry Threadgill.

"Que fait mon corps quand je n'en suis pas conscient ?" - Steve Paxton

Cet atelier rend hommage aux pratiques créées par le danseur Steve Paxton (1939-2024). Nous entrerons artistiquement dans les principes fondamentaux de la Contact Improvisation, initiée en 1972, ainsi que dans son travail Material for the Spine, développé depuis 1986.

"Formes pour les sensations et la perception" (Steve Paxton) : ces cours offriront aux participants l'opportunité d'explorer en profondeur l'étude fondamentale des forces physiques et écologiques auxquelles les danseurs sont confrontés lorsqu'ils se déplacent en relation avec eux-mêmes et avec les autres.

Nous engagerons le corps dans l'espace sphérique pour improviser en solo, en duo et collectivement. En approfondissant la discipline de la pratique, nous ferons évoluer le processus en outils pour danser et pour témoigner de la manière dont nous donnons sens au fait d'ÊTRE ICI. En jouant avec la chronosphère et les spirales du temps, de l'espace et du poids, nous explorerons les mots de Steve : "La danse est l'art d'être en un lieu. L'improvisation trouve ces lieux."

Les sources incluront les écrits de Steve ainsi que les découvertes résultant de nos pratiques partagées dans cette forme artistique vivante.

"Tomber… et tomber mieux - Théâtre du corps : du CI à la performance"

Ce stage s'adresse à ceux qui souhaitent aller au-delà de la pratique régulière pour aller vers la composition et la performance.

Un passage du somatique au poétique, du contact improvisé à la création partagée.

This year we have the privilege of welcoming Karen Nelson back. In fact, it was in November 2013 that we were able to experience her teaching.
She is one of the pioneers from the first generations of dancers who contributed to the development of Contact Improvisation in the 1970s.

It is an honor to have her with us for the MTL ANNUAL JAM and the intensive workshop.

We invite all dancers, of all experience levels, to participate in an intensive week of training, leading up to the annual jam, to build your Contact body.

Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 October from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

CONTENU: SMALL DANCE UNIVERSE
Small dance practices instigated by Steve Paxton (1939-2024) can open us to consciously experiencing the reflexes of balance which are faster than thought. Taking a ride on our own balance-dance in combination with a partner's within the living, changing, unpredictable universe of moving in touch is an out of this world dance experience, bigger than size.

Our own reflexes become even more ready to protect us in disorienting spaces. We will touch on spiral rolls, falling puzzles, and essential images from Material for the Spine (Paxton) and other home-made extensions of small dancing.

Offered to participants who have mastered the fundamental basics of Contact Improvisation and are seeking challenges beyond the usual practice.

Thursday October 31 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday November 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

CONTENU: Develop composition in CI through 'Tuning Scores.'
Presentation of the research during the annual jam. A magical moment to experience as a group!

“Tuning Scores” originated by Lisa Nelson, bring awareness of the space in which we are dancing. Our observer selves grow to include consciously communicating image and meaning into our reflex-based CI dancing, so that we can make communal and collaborative choices within our group of dance makers.

In this workshop, Tuning warm-ups and scores will play with opening touch and imagination, resting our eyes from social concerns to pick up their own sensing of light, shape, color, movement. We will learn movement with our eyes closed and transmit to others thru a process of non-authoritarian collaboration— and produce a dance in the process!

To bring facile, singular focus CI dancing into making compositional choices that engages and communicates visceral meaning is a potent craft, and our workshop will result in creating a performance score to show at the Montréal Annual Jam.

Biography

Karen Nelson : (she/her/chuki) rests playfully within dance improvisation and spiritual practice. As explorer-collaborator, teacher, maker, touring performer, author/contributor to Dancing with Dharma and Contact Quarterly she has been a mutator of the form Contact Improvisation since 1977.

She co-founded mixed-ability experiments Dance Ability and Diverse Dance Research Retreat and integrates Material for the Spine (Steve Paxton) and Tuning Scores (Lisa Nelson/Image Lab) into her physical-sensation based approach to dancing, along with investigating dominant cultural narratives and re-vers(ion)ing these fictions within her own embodiment and wider community.

CONTENU : Univers de la petite danse
Les pratiques de la petite danse, initiées par Steve Paxton (1939-2024), peuvent nous ouvrir à l'expérience consciente des réflexes d'équilibre, qui sont plus rapides que la pensée. Se laisser porter par notre propre sens de l'équilibre en combinaison avec celle d'un partenaire, au sein de l'univers vivant, changeant et imprévisible du mouvement en contact, est une expérience de danse hors du commun, bien plus grande que sa taille ne le laisse supposer.

Nos propres réflexes deviennent encore plus aptes à nous protéger dans des espaces désorientants. Nous aborderons les roulades en spirale, les puzzles de la chute, ainsi que des images essentielles tirées de Material for the Spine (Paxton) et d'autres extensions faites maison de la “petite danse”.

Pour les participants ayant intégré les bases fondamentales du Contact Improvisation et recherchant des défis qui vont au-delà de la pratique habituelle.

Les “Tuning Scores” créés par Lisa Nelson, apportent une conscience accrue de l'espace dans lequel nous dansons. Notre moi observateur grandit pour inclure consciemment une image et un sens communiquant dans notre danse en Contact Improvisation (CI) basée sur les réflexes, afin que nous puissions faire des choix communs et collaboratifs au sein de notre groupe de créateurs de danse.

Dans cet atelier, les échauffements et les partitions de Tuning joueront avec l'ouverture et l'imagination, libérant nos yeux des préoccupations sociales pour capter leur propre perception de la lumière, de la forme, de la couleur et du mouvement. Nous apprendrons le mouvement les yeux fermés et le transmettrons aux autres grâce à un processus de collaboration non autoritaire – et produirons une danse dans le processus !

Apporter une simplicité et une attention singulière à la danse Contact Improvisation en faisant des choix compositionnels qui engagent et transmettent une signification viscérale comme un art puissant.

In this workshop dancers will investigate how foundational principles of contact improvisation, including the dynamics of touch, moving support, yielding and reaching towards, collaborative improvisation, and perceptual tuning, can support inspired dancing.

Through guided practice we will develop our capacities for movement,creativity and heightened awareness. Our practice will center around communal and individual respect for ourselves and one another.

Biographies

Chris Aiken is an internationally recognized performer and teacher of dance improvisation performance and contact improvisation. He has performed and collaborated with many renowned dance artists including Steve Paxton, Kirstie Simson, Nancy Stark Smith, Peter Bingham, Andrew Harwood, Ray Chung and Angie Hauser.
His work has evolved through ongoing investigations of poetics, design, and performance. It is also grounded by years of research in the science of movement, perception and learning. Hi teaching and dancing has been influenced by extensive work with the Alexander Technique, Gyrotonic/Gyrokinesis and myofascial bodywork. Chris has received numerous awards for his artistic work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, as well as commissions from the Walker Art Center, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Dance Theater Workshop, and the National Performance Network. He received his MFA from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and is a Professor at Smith College in the Department of Dance.

Angie Hauser is a choreographer, performer and teacher. In addition to her duet work with Chris Aiken, Hauser is a long-time member of the Bebe Miller Company, receiving a BESSIE Award for her creative work with the company. Her work is featured in the online score “TWO” as part of MotionBank a Forsythe Company project and in the 2015 eBook “Dance Fort.”

Other choreographic projects include collaborations with gifted dance artists including Jennifer Nugent, K.J. Holmes, Darrell Jones, Kathleen Hermesdorf, and musicians Mike Vargas, Jesse Manno, and Tigger Benford. DESCRIPTION OF THE THEMATIC:
This intensive will foster a space and skills for high-stakes, accountable, and responsive contact dancing.

I propose that we dance with the bodies that we have, as the people we are, to invite unintentional magic.
I organize from a highly technical and strongly political research-oriented approach to training contact improvisation through an open system contact body.

We will practice practical anatomical, physical, and perceptual skills to open up avenues of awareness.
As we increase options/sensitivity for internal connectivity, touch, sustainably supporting/dispersing weight, finding disequilibrium, transferring force, and negotiating gravity we will also cultivate skills that support an unrelenting willingness to stay in.

We will take this work INTO SPACE as an active partner. Generosity, endurance, subtlety, transgression, composition, and responsive articulation will help frame our practices.
We will work with solo body, with partners in small constellations, and as a whole group. We will invite being seen and supporting/being supported as a performance practice. We will practice setting boundaries and be real about power/consent.

Let's say yes to difference within shifting proximities. Strategies will emerge through our practice.
How can our dancing tenderize our states of being while our states of being tenderize our dancing? I believe that we are the politics of our dancing.

My approach to teaching CI is increasingly informed by my study of the Feldenkrais® Method and social justice work. Intersectionality is central to my work.

All of my work prioritizes agency and honesty as we practice radical independence and responsible citizenship through our dancing. Bring your questions, grit, politics, and brave dancing selves into this contact improvisation research.

Description of the workshop

How does one practice and perform Contact Improvisation (CI)? At the outset Steve Paxton's experiments with CI were closely connected with the act of performance and corresponded with specific practices of sensing and perceiving.

From its influence on partnered acrobatics on large stages, to the informal presentations at contact festivals, to the way we watch, feel and listen to each other at a jam, or to the small dance experienced in a class, CI and the notion of refinement in its application and sophistication as a performing art continue to be intimately related. CI was and is part of a movement that both questions the values of spectacular produced shows and frequently calls up different values in the ways it is practiced and presented. In this workshop we will take a closer look at the layers of complexity and levels of subtleness in this evolving dance form. We will aim to cultivate an ease and gracefulness in those crossing fields and maintain an inquisitive attitude encouraging our performing skills to come into play.

On Monday and Tuesday (open to all) we will work with tuning our own experience and innate presence while studying/focusing on awareness, sensation, perception, impulse, influence, reflex, and reaction in order to create an intimate sense of connectedness, ease and spaciousness between them. Allowing for introspection and dialogue as we go, we will deepen our understanding of the micro-dynamics and fine points that reveal themselves in our dancing.

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (ongoing regular experience) we will examine and practice states and qualities of improvising, investigating a variety of relationships between imagination, action, time and space. We will also scrutinize how we sense, see and are seen by each other, and how we act with a sense of clarity while we move. How do we witness others and ourselves in the subtle and small range and in the bigger, wider range?

Specifically on Friday we will focus on performance, finding a nourishing and safe place for witnessing and working with the innate psychosomatic responses we also may find ourselves having in these arenas, such as dealing with numbness, stage fright, being overwhelmed or reverting to hyperbolical theatrics, often causing some sort of disconnection in the experience. A forty-minute performance score will be developed focusing on emptiness to fullness and back to emptiness while supporting each other and the overall atmosphere. This piece will be presented on Saturday evening during the Annual Montreal Contact Jam. In order for a sense of continuity and ensemble to be created and developed, participants in the Saturday presentation are therefore asked to attend Wednesday and Thursday and must commit to the entire Friday. (It is not possible to attend only the Friday session if you are performing).

Jori Snell: is a physical performing & visual artist from Holland/Denmark (1972). She was educated at Institutet för Scenkonst (93) in Italy and Nordisk Teaterskole (98) in Denmark.
Since 1998 she works as a freelance performer/dancer, director and educator in Europe and South Africa, transforming her training in physical theatre, visual art, contact improvisation, martial arts and butoh-related approaches into a personal language.

Between 2008-2016, she single-handedly initiated and sustained the contact improvisation scene in Cape Town, South Africa, and taught theatre and dance in many contexts, institutions and universities (Drama & Dance Departments of Cape Town and Rhodes). Her solo-productions: ‘Very Short Stories..', ‘Inua' and ‘Kitchen Fables in a Cookie Jar' have won several awards and international acclaim. In her performances and teaching she aims to bring alive an authentic expression in body, personality, object & space, moving between physical theatre and fairytales, dance and myth, poetry and the creation of magic visual pictures. Her inspiration in improvisation and contact improvisation has come from intensive work with Kirstie Simson, Bo Madvig, Lucia Walker, Nancy Stark Smith, Ray Chung and Andrew Harwood.
