CONTACT IMPROV ON THE SCENES OF TERRA KARNAVAL JULY 13 TO 20 2013

Please read! Please read! This message is adressed to all the contact improv lovers willing to see this uncommun art form expand!

Loftimpro has the mandate to form a troup of 40 dancers to join 2 PARADES FOR THE TERRA KARNAVAL here in Montreal. The parades will make their appearance on JULY 13th AT 20H30 and on JULY 16 AT 21H00 on Ste-Catherine street, near Place-des-Arts.

The parades will be danced on a remixed version of Félix Leclerc's song « Moi mes souliers » and participants will be dressed in white. Here is an original and eclectic challenge for us!

Creators, improvisors, manifest yourselves, this is a time of challenge! This is a golden opportunity that will allow us to share our uncommon and still unknown art form.

The Terra Karnaval will also present 1 contact improv duet every night on the main stage from July 13 to July 20. It is a highly mediatized event; as the shows attract between 5 to 10 000 auditors each night it is a very unique chance to share contact improv dance through Québec province.

For those who wish to participate to this event, we will be having rehearsals on July 11, 13 and 16 at 18h00, at Loftimpro studio, 3800 St-Laurent Street, 3rd floor.

Terra Karnaval provides you the white clothing but you can also bring your own if you prefere, as long as it's white. If you wish to have Terra Karnaval's clothing please contact us in private to give us your size, thank you!

Oyez ! Oyez ! Ce message s'adresse à tous les amoureux de la danse contact impro désirant partager leur art avec le public !

Loftimpro a reçu le mandat de regrouper une quarantaine de danseurs de contact improvisation pour faire partie de DEUX PARADES qui auront lieu sur la rue Sainte-Catherine, tout près de la Place-des-Arts, dans le cadre du TERRA KARNAVAL soit le SAMEDI 13 JUILLET À 20H30 et le MARDI 16 JUILLET À 21H.

Ces dernières seront dansées sur les notes remixées de la chanson « Moi mes souliers » de Félix Leclerc et tous les participants seront vêtus de blanc. Voilà un challenge éclectique et original !

Créateurs, improvisateurs, manifestez-vous que nous puissions relever le défi ! C'est une occasion en or qui nous permettra de partager notre art hors du commun et encore méconnu du grand public.

Le Terra Karnaval présentera aussi un duo de danseurs d'impro contact par soir sur la grande scène du 13 au 20 juillet inclusivement. C'est un évènement grandement médiatisé ; les spectacles attirent entre 5 et 10 000 auditeurs par soir alors il y a une chance unique de faire connaitre la danse contact improvisation à travers le Québec.

Pour ceux et celles qui veulent participer à cet évènement, nous aurons des répétitions les 11, 13 et 16 juillet à 18h au Loftimpro, 3800 rue St-Laurent 3e étage.

Des vêtements blancs vous sont offerts par le Terra Karnaval mais vous pouvez aussi porter les vôtres si vous le préférez, en autant qu'ils soient blancs. Si vous désirez des vêtements, veillez svp nous contacter en privé pour nous donner vos mensurations, merci !

A dance improvisation presentation, at the end of a one week artist residency, with Catherine Lessard, Gabriel Forestieri, Sébastien Provencher, Nicoletta Dolce, Marijoe Foucher & Co…
Followed by an encounter with the artists: a moment of sharing for your questions and comments, 5 to 5:45PM.
This presentation is the recital of a work-in-progress based on a deep process of observation and improvisation. It also is a meeting of several artistic universes, where each performer nourishes the space with its own wealth of experience.

We hope you can come! We need your witnessing!
At UQAM dance department, 840 Cherrier (Sherbrooke metro station), studio K-1150, high ground floor.
Admission: donation according to you capacity (suggested $5 to $20). Nobody will be refused for being unable to pay.

Suivie d'une période d'échange avec les artistes pour vos questions et vos commentaires, de 17h à 17h45.
Cette présentation est le témoignage d'un work-in-progress basé sur une démarche profonde d'observation et d'improvisation. C'est aussi la rencontre de plusieurs univers où chaque performer nourrit l'espace par son bagage et son expérience.

“As a maker of dances, a designer of theater and an improvising performer I am not specifically interested in presenting "dance" movement on the stage. What is happening at any moment I see as possible material that can be placed in a dance frame. My work, in the studio and on the stage, is a practice of living, in movement and in stillness. Noticing the details of my experience, understanding it's inner logic and sensing it's outer form.

Each of us exists in an on-going physical dialogue with our environment, tuning to the details and nuance in our own and each others' movement behavior, and to the conditions of our present moment. We observe, we feel and we act. We create our own images and construct our own understandings. Ordinarily this activity in unconscious.

In the theater I want to stimulate audience and performer alike to consciously and actively form their own images, and so my work is designed not to tell the audience what it is they are looking at. Inside of a moment of disorientation of not knowing lies an opportunity for a person in the theater to create their own story; In these times we are surrounded by media images designed by others to manipulate our attention and control what we know and do not know. As an artist the performance event offers me an opportunity to create empty space.”

Bio:

Daniel Lepkoff is a dancer, dance maker, improvising performer, teacher, and writer. His work looks at all movement as a finely tuned physical dialogue with the environment and explores the form and composition of this interaction as a language for making dances. He has developed techniques based on this approach that form a dance practice as well as a research into moving and living in the world. He is known for his commitment to composing dance works that bring the process of living movement onto the stage.

Starting in the early '70's Daniel was at the center of the development of Release Technique with Mary Fulkerson and of Contact Improvisation with Steve Paxton. Throughout the '70's and 80's he traveled extensively; actively teaching, performing and exposing these new ideas worldwide.

He was one of the founders of Movement Research in NYC (1975). Together with Mary Overlie, Wendell Beavers, Cynthia Hedstrom and Christina Svane, among others; he played an active role in defining the initial conception of this seminal organization: designing new programs, curating events, teaching regular classes and offering intensive workshops.

Living in New York City in the '80's Daniel performed in the works of several choreographers including: Trisha Brown, Mary Overlie, Judy Padow, & Nancy Topf. In his own solo and group work he experimented with the elements of voice, text, film & video, photography, interactions with physical objects, and constructing sets for performance.

From 1982 to 1987 he was a member of the New York based improvisational performance ensemble “Channel Z”. Channel-Z's work investigated the spontaneous, focused, and deeply physical movement states occurring in Contact Improvisation and developed the compositional potential of this approach to address all aspects of theater.

Over the years Daniel has engaged in several long term and important collaborations with other performing artists including: Lisa Nelson, Steve Paxton; Paul Langland, Saira Blanche Theater in Moscow (Oleg Soulimenko and Andrej Andrianov), Hungarian experimental musician Dora Attila and Japanese dancer, Sakura Shimada, among others.

He has published numerous articles articulating concepts that are central to his approach to dance making. These writings appear in Contact Quarterly, The MR Performance Journal, and Contredanse Publications in Bruxelles.

He has an ongoing interest in sound and video compositions, photography, singing and playing the guitar, mathematics, & house building.

ANIMAL - 2 performances de danse improvisation avec Daniel Lepkoff (45 minutes ch.)

« En tant que ”faiseur” de danse, designer de théâtre et interprète en improvisation, je ne suis pas spécialement intéressé à présenter un esthétique dansé sur la scène. Ce qui se produit à tout moment devient à mes yeux un matériel potentiellement insérable dans le cadre d'une danse.

Mon travail, dans le studio et sur la scène, est une pratique de vie, dans le mouvement et dans l'immobilité. Il s'agit pour moi de remarquer les détails de mon expérience, comprendre sa logique interne et sentir sa forme externe.

Chacun de nous existe dans un incessant dialogue physique avec notre environnement, en s'accordant avec les détails et les nuances présentes dans le comportement de notre mouvement, et avec les conditions de notre moment présent. Nous observons, nous sentons et nous agissons. Nous créons nos propres images et construisons notre propre compréhension des choses. Habituellement, cette activité est inconsciente.

Sur scène, je veux stimuler l'auditoire et les autres interprètes à former leurs propres images consciemment et activement. Par conséquent, mon travail est conçu de façon à ne pas raconter ou expliquer au public ce qu'ils sont en train de regarder. Au cœur d'un moment de désorientation dans l'inconnu réside l'opportunité pour une personne dans la salle de créer sa propre histoire ; en cette époque où nous sommes entourés par des images média conçues par d'autres pour manipuler notre attention et contrôler ce que nous savons et ne savons pas. En tant qu'artiste interprète, un événement performance m'offre la possibilité de créer de l'espace vide. » – Daniel Lepkoff
