Improvisation and acrobatics on Tatami mats, advanced level
with Catherine Lessard, invited collaborator: Philip Shinnick

Fall workshop, October 15 & 16, 2011

An open path to rebounds, spirals, lifts, anchors, lightness, flights, and more! This workshop will offer the possibility to explore several patterns that you can master and forget. The tatami mats is a soft Aikido floor, a perfect tool to practice improvised acrobatic forms. It allows us to take risks and to tame momentum, suspension and fall.

During these 2 afternoons, we will emphasize our work on the alignment of the skeleton into lifts.

Saturday & Sunday, 12:30 to 4:30 PM,
at Dojo Shoshin Aikido Montreal, 5445 ave de Gaspé, #208, Laurier metro

$60 before October 1st, $70 thereafter ($40 for 1 afternoon)

Catherine Lessard transmits with passion and coherence the key principles of Dance Improvisation and Contact Improvisation. She has studied and performed with dancers of international reputation such as Nancy Stark Smith, Daniel Lepkoff, David Zambrano, Andrew Harwood, Kirstie Simpson, Patricia Kuypers and Ray Chung. She also has experience in Body-Mind Centering (BMC), Authentic Movement, and butoh, and has professional training in music and communications.

Combining, in a unified pedagogy, both a sharp vision of art and a hungry curiosity for science, Catherine has been teaches and performs improvisation regularly in Montreal (Bizz studio, 303, Fleur d’Asphalte, Dojos), in USA and in France. She is a member of PIE (Performance Improvisation Exchange), a collective of 5 Canadian improvisers and searchers.

From 2007 to 2009, she has served as president of the Montreal Association for Contact Improvisation (ACI). Catherine’s workshops are explorations of human expression through breathing, awareness, non-judgement and various nuances of touch and movement, offered in an atmosphere of respect and playful discovery.
