THE ART OF DISTRIBUTION in Contact Improvisation

with Catherine Lessard

Fall mini-series, September 14 to October 12, 2011

Learning how to distribute our own weight is for me an essential practice in contact improvisation. It is a living art of adjustment and listening, a reading of every moment, which involves a tremendous understanding of the forces that run through us, whether quickly or slowly. Every part of us is subject to gravity at all times.

We are falling constantly. Even when we rise and stand, something plunges inside us. When we turn gravity into a valuable ally, our physical responses to reality are refined, our anchors multiply themselves, our relation to bodies, ground and space becomes lighter, the weight of our extremities engages in the process of adaptation to the present, and the weight of our center begins to radiate through our entire structure, easily finding its place between earth and sky. That’s what we will explore in this course.

Catherine Lessard transmits with passion and coherence the key principles of Dance Improvisation and Contact Improvisation. She has studied and performed with dancers of international reputation such as Nancy Stark Smith, Daniel Lepkoff, David Zambrano, Andrew Harwood, Kirstie Simpson, Patricia Kuypers and Ray Chung. She also has experience in Body-Mind Centering (BMC), Authentic Movement, and butoh, and has professional training in music and communications.

Combining, in a unified pedagogy, both a sharp vision of art and a hungry curiosity for science, Catherine has been teaches and performs improvisation regularly in Montreal (Bizz studio, 303, Fleur d’Asphalte, Dojos), in USA and in France. She is a member of PIE (Performance Improvisation Exchange), a collective of 5 Canadian improvisers and searchers.

From 2007 to 2009, she has served as president of the Montreal Association for Contact Improvisation (ACI). Catherine’s workshops are explorations of human expression through breathing, awareness, non-judgement and various nuances of touch and movement, offered in an atmosphere of respect and playful discovery.
