THE PRINCIPLES OF CONTACT IMPROVISATION
Born in a sea of touch, contact improvisation is a dance that was formed from the inside out. Underlying the fluid action of CI are principles that govern the relationship of moving bodies, and the physical and mental states of the dancers. The pioneers of the form have always worked to reveal these essentiels rather than to frame and determine specific actions, pathways or defined "steps". Like deep secrets, these principles represent the core wisdom of Contact improvisation. Mastery and entrance into the joys of liquid freedom come with fluency in these essentials. This class is an opportunity to learn CI skills from one of the original pioneers of this dance form. This class is appropriate and encouraged for dancers of all skill levels, for beginners as well as those wishing to deepen and clarify their study of CI.
ABOUT NITA LITTLE
Nita Little has been developping choreographing, performing and teaching improvisational dance for the past thirty-six years, notably Contact improvisation, which she helped evolve from its inception with Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith. She is a master teacher with former students all over the world who are themselves master dancers and teachers. Though CI she discovered her abiding interest in the evolution of consciousness and the mind-body relationship. As a performing artist her current work is a mix of both formal and improvisational choreography and scores. Nita teaches and performs yearly at international dance festivals Conscious evolution has been the backbone of her passion and her practice. Her goal is to see, feel and reveal grace in all its forms and as it exists in the actions of the mind and the body. |
