For the 2011 winter session, Valerie Sabbah is offering with great enthusiasm a second ten week Contact Improvisation course starting Thursday, January 20 from 5:00-6:15pm at the Centre de Ressourcement et Massothérapie in Rimouski, 88 St. Germain West.

Thursdays, 5:00 to 6:15pm

Centre de Ressourcement et Massothérapie

88 ST. Germain West, Rimouski.

Cost: $120

Over the ten weeks, we will explore the basic principles of Contact Improvisation such as rolls, falls, spirals, the point of contact and weight transfer. These skills will become tools towards developing a physical communication that is clear, fluid, solid and creates an opening towards yourself and with partners.

Through various exercises we will learn how to create an intuitive physical dialogue, which is at once responsible and respectful so to discover the joy of movement regardless of age, experience and physical limitations of the body.

This course will allow you to ground yourself into your body, let go of the preconceived ideas of the mind and let the intelligence of the body make its way.

What is Contact Improvisation ?

Contact improvisation is a partner dance form based on the physics of touch, weight transfer and the contact point in motion. It was founded in 1972 by Steve Paxton from the United States derived from his experience as a modern dancer and his studies in martial arts including Aikido and Tai Chi. Contact improvisation is a fusion of dance, martial arts, gymnastics and meditation, where the organic language of the body emerges from a play and a physical dialogue between partners. Athletic and sometimes explosive, sometimes gentle and meditative, this is a “dance” that sharpens our senses and awakens our ability to respond to what is happening in the moment.
