Complete beginners to contact improvisation are welcome, as are advanced practitioners. A priority is placed on safety and inclusivity.

01. De la base au sommet

Contact improvisation is a rich and diverse movement form that rewards ongoing training. This weekend workshop, suitable for all levels, introduces a series of practices that aim to deepen our understanding of the fundamentals of connecting through gravity.

These practices include weight-sharing through A-frame, X-wing, and four-legged animal; falling and rolling with bug, ball, and aikido rolls; finding ground through scorpion and sloth descents; and pathways for maneuverability for both base and flyer.

The instructor, Jonathan Lilly, has been dancing and training in contact improvisation for the past decade, and has taught weekend or longer workshops in a half-dozen cities in the US, Canada, and Europe. The material presented in this workshop is distilled from a year’s worth of teaching weekly three-hour contact classes in Toronto from Spring 2022 through Spring 2023. Prior to coming to contact, Jonathan practiced the martial art of aikido for 25 years, attaining the rank of yondan or fourth degree black belt. His teaching style attempts to balance rigour and precision with individual curiosity and creativity. He is delighted to be invited to teach in Montreal for the first time.
