This class is before the annual jam.

A guided journey through a progression of "changing states" of
body and mind from solo sensitizing to gravity and support, through
group circulation, contact improvisation engagements, then opening
into whole room jamming with compositional awareness. The "Underscore”
a structure for improvised dancing that Nancy has been developing
since 1990 ”will invisibly guide us from rest to active dancing and
back to rest and reflection".

NANCY STARK SMITH first trained as an athlete and gymnastic,
leading her to study and perform modern and postmodern dance in the
early 1970s, greatly influenced by the Judson Dance Theater
breakthroughs of the 1960s in NYC.

She danced in the first
performances of contact improvisation with Steve Paxton and others in
1972 and has since been central to its development as dancer,
teacher, performer, writer/publisher, and organizer. She has traveled
extensively throughout the world teaching and performing contact and
other improvised dance work with Steve Paxton and many other favorite
dance partners and performance makers, including Julyen Hamilton,
Andrew Harwood, Karen Nelson, and musician Mike Vargas. In 1975 she
cofounded Contact Quarterly, an international dance and improvisation
journal which she continues to coedit, produce, and publish. Her
writings appear in the book, Taken by Surprise: A Dance Improvisation
Reader. She lives in the U.S. in western Massachusetts.

What’s contact danse?

An invitation to let go in a haven of peace. Dancing, experience the laws of gravity, momentum and balance, that is the contact improvisation.
