Biography of Chris Aiken

Chris Aiken is an internationally recognized performer and teacher of dance improvisation performance and contact improvisation. He has performed and collaborated with many renowned dance artists including Steve Paxton, Kirstie Simson, Nancy Stark Smith, Peter Bingham, Andrew Harwood, Ray Chung and Angie Hauser.
His work has evolved through ongoing investigations of poetics, design, and performance. It is also grounded by years of research in the science of movement, perception and learning. Hi teaching and dancing has been influenced by extensive work with the Alexander Technique, Gyrotonic/Gyrokinesis and myofascial bodywork. Chris has received numerous awards for his artistic work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, as well as commissions from the Walker Art Center, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Dance Theater Workshop, and the National Performance Network. He received his MFA from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and is a Professor at Smith College in the Department of Dance.

Angie Hauser is a choreographer, performer and teacher. In addition to her duet work with Chris Aiken, Hauser is a long time member of the Bebe Miller Company, receiving a BESSIE Award for her creative work with the company. Her work is featured in the online score “TWO” as part of MotionBank a Forsythe Company project and in the 2015 eBook “Dance Fort.”

Other choreographic projects include collaborations with gifted dance artists including Jennifer Nugent, K.J. Holmes, Darrell Jones, Kathleen Hermesdorf, and musicians Mike Vargas, Jesse Manno, and Tigger Benford. She is a sought after teacher in the realms of improvisation, performance and dance technique regularly teaching on the faculty of major festivals and intensives including Bates Dance Festival, American Dance Festival, SaltFest, Florida Dance Festival, Earthdance, Transformation Danse (Montreal), and La Escuela Profesional de Danza (Mazatlan). She received her MFA from Ohio State University and is currently a Professor at Smith College in the Department of Dance.

Michaël Boudreau is a contemporary music composer and improviser based in Montreal. Between his explorations as a musician for the contemporary improvisation troupe Lindex from 2013 to 2017 and his training in free improvisation at UdeM, Michaël has sharpened a sense of musicality always in search of a symbiosis specific to the performing arts. . Practicing contact improvisation himself for more than ten years, he developed a sensitivity, an ability to listen and a deep respect for the rituals emanating from this discipline.
Whether with the guitar or the acoustic piano, with synthesizers and loopers or with installations interacting with the raw material of the sound environments present (footsteps, breathing, crackling, etc.) Michaël knows how to build meditative layers and organic conducive to trance. Her first commitment is always to offer a deep listening in order to channel and nourish the energy of co-creation that emanates from the dance, the space and the present community.

As a musician and contact improvisation dancer, Shanthi Minor is passionate about finding a fluid partnership between sound and movement. Using the violin to channel energy in motion (e-motion), the soundscape fuses styles of Celtic, classical, folk and Indian devotional music. Since the age of 6, Shanthi has been playing classical piano and violin, and in her early twenties realized that she could have more fun improvising with others. She therefore began to play improvised and traditional music on the violin with Celtic and folk groups, and on the harmonium to accompany her singing kirtan (devotional music).

She has performed at folk festivals and yoga retreats across Canada and the United States. Currently, in Montreal, she plays and sings with the kirtan “big-band” Le Noble Chemin, the spiritual group Amma QC, and for contact improvisation dancers when the moment is improvised.

Aided by his practice of musical improvisation during underscores, jams, laboratories, or even ecstatic dances, his listening to dancers has never ceased to be refined, these practices offering him more joy and inspiration each time. inspiration. It is in this perspective that this one comes to occupy the sound space of CI jams, in this awareness of the other in everyone. For him, contact improvisation is an artistic practice that is as somatic as it is cathartic, as creative as it is poetic, making it possible to understand in a physical way a policy of the meeting of two entities. He is committed to transmitting these values ​​of inclusion and awareness through these rhizomatic exchanges.
